The US threatens to ban TikTok if Chinese owners don’t sell their stakes

Banning TikTok and WeChat was part of a long diplomatic and trade war waged by the Trump administration.

(Sputnik) The Biden administration is threatening to ban videosharing app TikTok if its Chinese owners don’t sell their shares, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The report said Wednesday that TikTok indicates such a forced sale will not address US national security concerns.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is set to testify before the House Energy and Trade Committee on March 23.

Last week, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the White House supports efforts by the US Congress to pass legislation giving new agencies the power to deal with foreign technology threats like TikTok to the United States.

PROCEED TO RECOMMENDATIONS

According to the White House, the legislation would give the US government the power to prevent certain foreign governments from using technology services operated in the United States in a way that poses a risk to sensitive American data and US national security. The legislation comes amid concerns over ties between TikTok and the Chinese government.
