After 31 years of reign, the Labrador was dethroned by the this Wednesday the 15th French bulldog as the most popular dog in the US. It’s the first time the French bulldog has climbed to the top of the popularity rankings conducted annually by the American Kennel Club (AKC), an organization established in 1884 to defend purebred dogs. The list of winners for 2022, presented in a statement, places the French bulldog ahead of the Labrador retriever, the exact opposite of the two breeds’ positions the previous year. Behind it were the preferred races Golden retrieverO German shepherd dog and the poodle. Rising from 14th place in 2012 to the top of the rankings ten years later, “the French Bulldog has grown in popularity over the years, and with good reason: It’s playful, versatile, loyal, and sociable,” said Gina DiNardo , President of the organization. The AKC’s annual popularity ranking is based on the number of dogs registered for each breed of dog. In 10 years, the number of French Bulldogs registered has increased by 1,000%. French bulldogs, like their English cousins and pugs, have short muzzles, which can lead to breathing problems and other health complications.
