Lasso out! It’s the phrase heard again and again from those who are calling for the ruler’s resignation not only because of alleged links to corruption and drug trafficking, but also because of social abandonment.
Assembly members must listen to citizens and start the process to bring forward the end of Lasso’s term, the country is in the midst of a wave of insecurity and the government is not working on the structural causes, Pablo Iturralde, one of the MPs, told Prensa Latina protesters.
The formal impeachment request document is expected to be tabled in the assembly in the next few hours, said lawmaker Esteban Torres of the Social Christian Party, one of the groups backing the mechanism.
According to Torres, they are debugging the official text calling for prosecution for crimes against public administration, as there is evidence that Lasso knew of corporate corruption and links to drug trafficking.
Likewise, Gisella Garzón, representative of the Bank of the Union for Hope (UNES), believes that the document will pass the filter of the Constitutional Court, since there are precedents of this type.
He explained that they reached a consensus that they would request the trial only on the basis of crimes against public administration and ruled out crimes against state security.
The most important thing now is to establish the president’s political responsibility for knowing and concealing the León de Troya case and its links to the Albanian mafia, Garzón stressed.
