Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is recalling 4.2 million packages of prescription drugs because they fail to meet child safety requirements, federal safety officials said.

The recall affects Pfizer’s Nurtec ODT 75 mg orally disintegrating tablets sold in cartons containing a blister card containing eight tablets, according to a notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The products’ packaging is not child-resistant, as required by the Packaging Prevention Act, which “poses a risk of poisoning if the contents are swallowed by young children,” the CPSC said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 35,000 visits to the emergency room are due to accidental drug overdoses in children under the age of 5.

“The use of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs is increasing among people of all ages,” the CDC said. “Increasing drug use also increases the potential for accidental overdoses. Children are particularly vulnerable to accidental overdoses, but overdoses can be prevented.”
