Release date of Horizon Forbidden West DLC: Burning Shores

This additional solo content was announced at the Game Awards ceremony on December 8th, 2022, 11 months after the release of the base game, and will be available for download from April 19, 2023.

Guerrilla Games and Sony didn’t bother players for long as the DLC release date had already been announced Reveal trailerwhich we invite you to view below.

Horizon Forbidden West DLC: On which platform?

This is surely the most controversial aspect of this unprecedented adventure. Burning Shores will only be available on PS5, while the base game is offered on both PS4 and PS5. A surprising decision that will potentially prevent millions of players from experiencing the true ending of Horizon Forbidden West.

Mathijs de Jonge, director of the game, justified this choice with irreversible technical limitations, notably revealing that a “certain battle scene” requires “a lot of memory and processing power”. Technical capabilities beyond the capabilities of the PS4.

What graphical improvements for Burning Shores, the Horizon DLC?

Freed from the technical constraints of the PS4, the teams at Guerrilla Games pulled out all the stops they had to offer the most immersive open-world experience in PS5 history.

Already considered the most beautiful game of 2022 by the experts at DigitalFoundry, Horizon Forbidden West will be more sparkling than ever with this additional content exclusive to PlayStation 5. Of course, if the game continues to be supported by the Decima engineits in-house engine, which will also be used in Death Stranding 2, it will really play at full power.

Main improvement, and last but not least: Burning Shores supports 60 fps in full gameplay. This means that the combat will be of unparalleled fluidity and dynamism, which is a feat for an open-world game.

The DLC will also take full advantage of the PS5’s SSD capabilities, as game director Mathijs de Jonge clarifies:Load times are truly a thing of the past.“A statement that contrasts with the long load times we often see in Horizon Forbidden West.

When Burning Shores promises to be faster, it’s also going to be nicer. When the open world map will be smaller, Environments will be richer and more detailed than in the base game. The view range will be extended and Aloy will benefit from special lighting that will be active all the time. What could save him from absurd hair controversies?

Horizon Forbidden West DLC: Burning Shores gameplay

Unsurprisingly, the game mechanics of this DLC will pick up the basics of the main title. So we find a new open world areanavigable both on land and sea and also in the air (with the Helionwing mount).

Located in the ruins of Los Angeles, this new area offers players the opportunity to face Ted Faro’s fearsome war machines (including new ones), but also to engage in various activities already present in Forbidden West: secondary quests, horse racing , Search for relics, discovery of panoramas of the past, connection to a greatneck to discover the sights of the map… In short, we shouldn’t get bored easily.

What creatures do we encounter in the Horizon Forbidden West DLC?

The base game’s extensive bestiary should make a remarkable reappearance here, and the presence of a Horus the trailer hints at an epic clash. Keep in mind that the Horus are the most imposing war machines created by Ted Faro and we don’t face them directly in Forbidden West.

Otherwise, here’s the list of creatures that should undoubtedly return to Burning Shores:

  • helion wings
  • tunnel boring machine
  • graves
  • marauder
  • Grazer
  • Shooting Horn
  • runner
  • defensive strike
  • gallop claw

Which story for the Horizon Forbidden West DLC?

After visiting the Forbidden West and the territories of the Tenakth, and in particular traversing the ruins of Las Vegas and San Francisco, we wonder what Guerrilla Games has in store for this expansion of Aloy’s adventures … which will be a good direct sequel to the Events of Forbidden West.

What we do know now is that the DLC will take place in Los Angeles…or at least what’s left of it. Transformed into a volcanic archipelago, the imposing City of Angels has seen better days – especially since being ravaged by Ted Faro’s metal beasts.

Among the expected characters, by the way Aloywe could see again very well Kotallo, Zo And Alva – who accompanied her on her travels to the forbidden west. Another character, the Enigmatic Beach from the Banuk tribe, could also reappear. Introduced in Zero Dawn, the former shaman is only mentioned in Forbidden West, but all indications are that he will be present in the expansion.
