Penn State takes 7 to semifinals!
Penn State had a historic quarterfinal round Friday morning that saw all 7 of their quarterfinalists advance to the semifinals. Roman Bravo-Young, Beau Bartlett, Shayne Van-Ness, Levi Haines, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks and Greg Kerkvliet were the 7 Nittany Lion wrestlers who advanced to the semifinals. A birth in the semifinals not only guarantees them a top 6 finish, but each semifinalist also earned 7 team points from Penn State. Alongside the semi-finalists, Max Dean is still alive and will wrestle Jaxon Smith in the round of 16 on Friday night.
The battle for a team trophy is close!
Iowa might be in second place, but there are 7-8 other teams with a realistic chance of making the top 4 and taking home a team trophy. Significant points are available in the next round, with 7 points on the line for a semi-final win and 3.5 points up for grabs for a round of 16 win. With so many teams still chasing a trophy, Friday night’s round will be crucial for any team in the top ten.

Top 10 after session 2
Penn State with 7 in quarters – Iowa Trails with 5
Penn State advanced 7 of their 9 wrestlers to the quarterfinals and has a 4.5 point lead over Iowa, which has only 4 wrestlers in the quarterfinals. Despite Alex Facundo going 0-2 and Max Dean losing to Silas Allred, the Nittany Lions extended their lead with 11 bonus points from their winning wrestlers. Those bonus points alone would be enough to keep up with the entirety of the current team in 15th place.
Of the teams after Penn State in the top 10, Missouri has the most in quarterfinals, with 6 wrestlers battling for a spot in the semifinals on Friday morning. After that, the Tigers have 3 wrestlers alive in the consolation round. Next, both Nebraska and Virginia have 5 wrestlers in the quarter. Nebraska has only 2 survivors in the consolation round while Virginia Tech has 3 wrestlers alive at the back to fight for All-American honors.

Bonus points The difference for Penn State in Session 1
Penn State had won 8 of its 9 wrestlers Thursday in the first round. NC State, Iowa and Missouri had also gained 8 wrestlers, but Penn State took their lead by securing bonus points from 5 wrestlers with pins at 3 weights. Each victory in the championship rounds is worth 1 point, with a major decision earning an extra point, a tech case earning 1.5 and a pin earning 2 points. If the teams behind the Nittany Lions hope to keep up, they’ll have to give in to increase their bonus point production.
