College Hockey: The Patriots in Bronze

The Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes won the bronze medal of the men’s varsity hockey championship in Charlottetown on Sunday.

The UQTR squad defeated the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 3-2.

The “Pats” quickly took control of the game, scoring two goals in the first period. David Noël and Mathieu Boucher were the originators of these successes.

The crowd favorites split in the second period, but Vincent Milot-Ouellet restored priority to the Quebec team before the end of the period. This performance turned out to be a victory.

Samuel L’Italy provided two assists to win. Goalkeeper Alexis Gravel stopped 22 of his rival’s 24 shots.

The Patriots were the country’s defending champions after winning top honors in 2022.

The carabiners at the foot of the podium

On the women’s side, the University of Montreal Carabins failed to please their fans, losing the bronze medal game to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

The tournament hosts lowered the flag 3 to 2.

The Carabins were two goals down after 40 minutes, but Justine Pelletier and Jessika Boulanger found the net in the first eight minutes of the third period.

The Blues’ hopes of victory were shattered when Ireland Perrott struck the bull’s eye with less than four minutes remaining in regular time. The UdeM skaters couldn’t come back a second time and had to admit defeat.
