Panama expresses solidarity with Ecuador after strong earthquake

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is also lamenting the loss of life as a result of the tragedy, the Embassy of the Isthmus Nation in Quito is in contact with Panamanians living in that country.

The quake shook a coastal area of ​​Ecuador the day before and was also felt in northern Peru.

The government of Ecuador declared a state of emergency in the province of Azuay this Sunday after the earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale that caused 13 landslides in the area.

According to the Geophysical Institute, the earthquake had its epicenter in Guayas and had the characteristics to be called an earthquake.

Seismologist Pablo Palacios asserted that the tellurium movement was deep (about 44 kilometers), in an area where earthquakes of this type have already occurred.

Ecuador has reported at least 180 homes affected, 84 destroyed, 80 damaged educational units, as well as 22 public and 32 private facilities, 33 health centers, and five bridges.

This South American nation lies in the Pacific Belt, or Ring of Fire, which concentrates some of the world’s major subduction zones (collapse of tectonic plates) and is the scene of intense seismic activity.

In addition to Ecuador, the horseshoe-shaped belt includes other countries such as Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, the USA and Canada.
