The families of the police officers killed have been compensated by the Alberta government –

The families of the two police officers killed on duty on Thursday will each receive $100,000 from the provincial government, as promised by the prime minister.

Danielle Smith made the announcement during a local radio interview on Saturday. The money will be donated through the Alberta Heroes’ Fund.

“Constable Brett Ryan and Constable Travis Jordan were both young men with young families, and one of the assets we have to support our local families is our Heroes Fund,” she said.

She hopes that $100,000 can help what awaits families in the wake of this “horrific tragedy.”

Families are also being supported following a crowdfunding campaign through the GoFundMe page set up by the Edmonton Police Foundation. This campaign reached $240,000 as of Saturday afternoon.

Established in 2020, the Alberta Heroes Fund supports the bereaved families of police officers, firefighters, paramedics and security guards killed on the job.

The province of Alberta contributes US$1.5 million annually to this fund.

Officers Ryan and Jordan were both killed by a 16-year-old boy early Thursday morning. They had been called to a police operation in a residential building. The suspect then took his own life.
