Six weeks after the devastating earthquake in the Turkish-Syrian border region, an international donors’ conference will take place in Brussels on Monday. The meeting is organized by the European Union in coordination with the United Nations. Sweden, which currently chairs the EU Council of Ministers, is expecting the largest possible financial commitments to help earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.
According to authorities, more than 50,000 people died in the February 6 aftershocks, with a magnitude of up to 7.8. Hundreds of thousands are still homeless in both countries.
So far, the EU has provided several million euros in humanitarian aid to support those affected. Among other things, Austria helped with family tents, heaters, camp beds and hygiene packs.
