Rachel Zegler defends Shazam: Fury Of The Gods against “pointless mean criticism”…though she said she took the role because she “needed a job”.
Rachel Zegler isn’t happy about the ‘insanely mean’ comments about her latest film, Shazam: Fury of the Gods.
The 21-year-old actress, who wore a sizzling, sheer dress to the film’s premiere, took to her social media to retaliate with critics over the weekend.
“Some people out there are just… needlessly mean. And it’s unnecessary. And I know, I know, “If you can’t handle the heat…” and all that nonsense, and you’re right,” she wrote.
“But our film is actually very good, it’s just cool to hate fun these days. That’s okay. It’s all right.’
The film had a pretty dismal opening weekend with just $65.5 million at the worldwide box office.

The West Side Story actress added, “We have an 85% viewership rating for a reason.”
Rachel’s defense of her film comes after admitting she accepted the role because she needed a job.
While speaking to the Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of her film last week, the 21-year-old star got candid about how she ended up in the DC Universe.
She said she “need a job,” before adding, “I’m so serious.”
“The reality is we’re in the middle of a pandemic and I haven’t worked and I haven’t been able to get a job for my entire life because West Side Story hadn’t come out yet,” she confessed. “It was really difficult to book work for me.”
The Steven Spielberg-directed remake of the classic musical and popular film was Zegler’s debut role.
She was billed as a sensation in the lead role of Maria and won the Golden Globe for Best Actress – Comedy or Musical.
Zegler was thrilled when she landed the role of Anthea and was told she would be starring as one of Atlas’ vengeful daughters alongside Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. Zachary Levi plays Shazam.

“I loved the first film and the fact that they even wanted me to come in for a call back and then a camera read and everything in between, I’m so happy I got this job,” she added. “I made some of my best friends at this job. I absolutely adore this film too, so I’m excited.’
Zegler’s boyfriend Josh Rivera, 27, was her date for the Los Angeles premiere of her latest movie.
The pair first became an item while working on Stephen Spielberg’s 2021 remake of West Side Story, and they’ve followed up on that collaborative project with the highly anticipated prequel, Hunger Games.
Zeglar stars in the title role in 2024’s “Snow White” and in The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as Lucy Gray Baird, a District 12 homage, while Rivera secured the role of a Hunger Games mentor named Sejanus Plinth .
“I’ve never been prouder of anyone in my life,” Zegler wrote on her Instagram Story over the summer when she shared the news that her boyfriend had been cast in the prequel.
The aspiring actors appeared to make their romance official on Instagram on Valentine’s Day last year, when Zegler shared a black-and-white selfie photo of the couple on Instagram.
“Committing Valen crimes,” commented Zegler, who posted a video showing Rivera feeding her during a romantic dinner.
‘Happy love day from me and me.’
Had fun: “I’ve made some of my best friends at this job, I absolutely adore this film too, so I’m excited,” Rachel said
