Condemned to languish in a public school

It was impossible for a public school teacher not to smile as he read the caption of this short story: “She films a teacher in a bar, the school sends her back“.

You can only afford such a luxury in the private sphere. In public, a student can videotape, bite, hit, or even threaten to kill their teacher without fear of being kicked out.

But the plight of the rich fascinates me… So I read beyond the title.

After the event, the parents are seeking $215,000 in damages. Certain excerpts from the lawsuit are very representative of a particular vision of education.

Two elements concern me in this story: the disempowerment of parents in relation to their children’s behavior and the real reason they chose private school.

The fault of others

Whether in public or private, more and more parents defend their children with their eyes closed. No matter what their sweetheart said or did, the parent-client always agrees with their perfect offspring. We skillfully turn our perpetrator into a victim.

In this case, the bar is primarily to blame for not listing “well-dressed young girls who follow clothing trends and fashion”. Blame it on her nine friends, who widely shared the video she innocently sent them via Instagram.

Above all, however, the school management was to blame, who confiscated her mobile phone (pain) and who “held her against her will for several hours and subjected her to an inquisitorial interrogation, without any justification”.

The death penalty

If you haven’t already shed tears—heartless people—know that dismissing our dear Aurore could cause untold suffering and ruin her life.

In fact, according to the lawsuit, she risks having to complete her public high school education and having her efforts over the past four years undone.

Are you shocked?

Not me.

I finally got to hear what many parents are thinking in private, but they will never dare to say it in public.

They choose a private school because they see it as an insurance policy. An investment to protect your good conscience. Why mingle with the rabble when you can evolve with those around you? Consistency tastes much better.

In a very relevant text published in 2017, Fabrice Vil asked the question “Where are the privileged?”. I invite you to read it. As we are used to in education, his remarks remain timely.

However, I have good news for you.

Since the lawsuit was filed, the school has agreed to reinstate their student. The young girl will be able to continue building her brick house.

Given her background, she seems destined for a bright future.
