Quebec is postponing the Culture and Quebec Citizenship course by one year

Quebec slows down the implementation of the Quebec Culture and Citizenship course: the new program, which will replace Quebec Ethics and Culture, will be taught in all schools a year later than planned, starting in the 2024 school year.

The implementation of the new course will take place “gradually” in autumn 2023, as we can read in the budget documents presented on Tuesday. According to our information, schools can then teach the new content on a “voluntary” basis.

It will have to wait until the start of the 2024 school year for all students to be able to access it.

In recent months, teachers’ unions have repeatedly called for the implementation of this new course to be postponed to the start of the school year.

The final version of the program is not yet available, and teachers are calling for more training to be able to teach complex and sometimes sensitive content, which includes sex education concepts.

Publishers will also not be able to print the new fall textbooks, the Journal was told.

Pilot projects are currently underway in a handful of schools. At the elementary level, the new course will allow them to explore digital education issues, while allowing secondary school students to become acquainted with the history of Quebec and its institutions, particularly through a visit to the National Assembly, we can consult the budget documents.
