A second body was extricated from the rubble of the listed building that burst into flames on Place d’Youville in Old Montreal last Thursday.
Police said the body was extricated from the remains of the building by the Montreal Fire Department’s technical rescue team, which has been searching the rubble since the tragedy.
The identity of this second victim could not be immediately confirmed. “The body was entrusted to the Forensic Science and Medicine Laboratory,” said Montreal City Police Department spokesman Julien Lévesque.
More information on the progress of the research could possibly be announced at the authorities’ next press conference on Wednesday morning.
A first body was recovered from the rubble last Sunday.
According to the authorities, five people are still missing since the incident happened in a building known to offer rental apartments on the Airbnb platform.
On Monday and Tuesday, the city of Montreal and the Quebec government rested the ball on who is responsible for monitoring and tackling short-term rentals.
