Budget Girard: You’ll soon be able to send text messages and pictures to 9-1-1

Starting next year, SMS, photos, and videos can be sent to “next-generation” 9-1-1 operators.

According to an order from the Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), all phone companies in the country must upgrade their networks by March 2025 to allow 9-1-1 emergency operators to handle “the new forms of communication,” such as text messages, pictures, videos, and even biomedical information.

Girard’s budget, presented Tuesday, is $45.5 million to support emergency response and secondary call centers in this modernization effort.

“Given the significant financial cost and timeline to be met, several municipalities will need financial support to meet their PSAP modernization commitments,” the report explains.
