It was a great night on the rink for the Caps as they celebrated their legendary captain, Alex Ovechkin. However, could the Caps get the gaming portion of the celebrations over the line?
Alex Ovechkin opened the gate because of course he did. TJ Oshie deflected home the second marker of the game. Conor Sheary scored the Caps’ third goal of the first period. Eric Robinson got one back for Columbus.
Adam Boqvist absolutely flicked the Blue Jackets into a one-goal deficit. Sonny Milano burned his former team to bring the caps back to two. Jack Roslovic answered for the blooj. Nick Jensen in the McNugget minute.
Boqvist got his second of the night with another ball. Emil Bemstrom tied everything together. Nick Jensen with a sweet backhand to restore the lead. Boone Jenner tied it back together with the mesh reducer pulled. Roslovic wins it in overtime.
Blue Jackets beat Caps 7-6.
- What an absolutely gorgeous pregame ceremony. The Caps know how to do these things right. And it does Alex Ovechkin. He opened the gate by mistake, but that’s what a good scorer does. The goal was Ovi’s 40th goal of the season, marking his 13th 40-goal season of his career in which he surpasses Wayne Gretzky (12) for the most 40-goal season in NHL history.
- Dylan Strome is absolutely red hot. He now has 16 points (6g, 10a) in his last 12 games. It seems that the new top line consisting of Ovi, Strome and Tom Wilson could work very well.
- Rasmus Sandin with another incredibly impressive setup Conor Sheary‘s strike in the first period. Sandin now has 11 assists in nine games since being dealt to DC.
- head coach Peter Laviolette promised a better start to this game. He sure got one. The Caps had a three against Daniil Tarasov before Columbus seemed to know what hit them.

- The first half of the second wasn’t good. It was like the old Caps came back from the first period and it was all Columbus for a while. They found each other in the back half and still walked away by two goals.
- What a nice give and go Sonny Milano And Nicklas Backstrom. That was an old backstrom in this piece.
- didn’t love Charlie Lindgren‘s game of late. He’s got some absolute snipes this game, but he’d probably want a few back, too. At the same time, the Caps’ defense was absolutely terrible for long stretches of the games.
- What on earth was this third period?
