The 51-year-old’s current contract was due to end at the end of the 2023-2024 season. He now has a contract until 2027.

“On behalf of the Kroenke family [les propriétaires de l’Avalanche] and the entire organization, we are pleased to announce a long-term commitment with our head coach,” Avalanche president of hockey operations Joe Sakic said in a statement. Jared did a great job behind the bench and deserves this contract extension and the fact that he continues to be the leader of our team.”

Bednar was hired ahead of the 2016-2017 season and held a record of 281-190-52 at the top of the “Avs”. Last year, he led his team to the Stanley Cup, a first for the Colorado organization since 2001.

“Managing this team for the past seven years has been a privilege,” said Bednar. I am grateful and excited to have the opportunity to build on what we have achieved so far. I look forward to working with the players and in an extraordinary organization for a long time to come.”

A native of Yorkton, Sask., the National League head coach ranks third in longevity behind Jon Cooper (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh Penguins).
