As a matter of fact, ESET Institute, Europe’s leading publisher of security solutions, has discovered dozens of fake websites resembling Telegram and WhatsApp. However, these are infected with a Trojan horse allow their authors to recover their users’ crypto addresses and steal the contents of their wallets.
Members of the crypto sphere are therefore exclusively targeted by this new execution. To attract audiences, criminals launch sponsored videos or ads on social media, and then redirect users to their fake version of Telegram or WhatsApp.

Once the victim clicks on it, The built-in malware called Clipper then hacks the user’s computer or phone clipboard to retrieve their crypto address and silently replace it with the criminals’.
Worse, Clipper even uses optical character recognition to decode text in screenshots stored on compromised devices and can also intercept the victim’s messages to replace all sent and received crypto addresses with those of the attackers.

- Do not download apps outside of platforms like Google Play or Microsoft;
- Don’t keep crypto address in your pictures or on your clipboard, prefer to copy them by hand;
- If in doubt, have your apps checked by security software.
