Opera integrates ChatGPT and employs multiple generative AI tools in its web browsers

Generative artificial intelligence is now ubiquitous, and the digital giants had better turn quickly if they don’t want to be left behind by the competition. Opera, the publisher of the web browser of the same name, understood this well and just announced the first stage of its Browser IA program, which aims to eventually integrate an in-house AI engine into its Opera and Opera GX browsers.

Browser-integrated ChatGPT and ChatSonic

What could be better than granting access to popular chatbots without having to open them in another tab? So that you don’t have to juggle between open pages and your favorite chatbots, Opera made the decision to integrate them right into the browser’s sidebar. As with messaging, the Norwegian company decided to give ChatGPT and ChatSonic (a competitor also based on GPT-4) direct access. These two tools can therefore be used in one window independently of the rest of your navigation. You can therefore leave a ChatGPT or ChatSonic window open while you consult the web pages open in your tabs.

But the browser will go even further. Indeed, Opera will integrate a module whose purpose is to help you create pumps. AI Prompts, which takes the form of a button to be grafted onto the browser toolbar, suggest the beginnings of prompts to help you, for example, in writing your publications on social networks. Above all, the tool should prove to be very useful to enrich your navigation. You can take advantage of it during your navigation, for example by sending highlighted text that you do not understand and asking him to explain it to you in a simple way.

Depending on which service you use, ChatGPT or ChatSonic, the answer to your question will automatically appear in the appropriate section of the chatbot being surveyed. With these new tools, Opera hopes you can “join conversations with generative AI services to abridge or explain articles, generate tweets, or request relevant content based on highlighted text.”

Features available in early access

Currently, these new features are only available in Early Access in Opera and Opera GX. In order to use this, you must first update your browser and then go to the settings. You then need to access the advanced settings to enable early access to the AI command prompt module.

You can then choose which chatbots to embed in the sidebar and decide whether you want to embed the AI Helper prompts in the address bar or when you select text with the mouse.
