A medical expert at Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski accident trial says the man she allegedly met suffered such a blow that he can no longer do the things he enjoys, including wine tasting and spending time with loved ones.
dr Wendell Gibby, a neuroradiology specialist at the University of California, San Diego, said Dr. Terry Sanderson, 76, has shown signs of traumatic brain damage that altered his behavior after Paltrow, 50, allegedly met him on a ski slope at Utah’s Deer Valley Resort on February 26, 2016.
“Terry was a highly functional, active person,” Gibby said in court Wednesday. “Every day he did many things. Group meetings, wine tasting, skiing, volunteering.
“After the accident, his condition took a sudden turn for the worse and he stopped many of the activities he enjoyed doing.”
Sanderson, a retired optometrist, claims his way of life was permanently derailed after Paltrow allegedly slammed into him and fled. However, Paltrow claims Sanderson was the one who bumped into her.
She sat quietly in Park City courthouse Wednesday wearing a cream button-down sweater, brown corduroy pants and hair tied back as she sipped on green juice. She stayed on her phone and appeared to be texting during Gibby’s testimony.
Gibby said that while Sanderson appeared to pass all of his tests for neurological damage, the former Army doctor had failed an exam. Gibby concluded that Sanderson showed abnormalities in his thinking skills.

The neurologist noted that while out hiking one day, Sanderson had to call the police to help him find his car in a parking lot and even got lost at a hardware store.
Gibby added that after the crash, Sanderson’s relationships with his children, grandchildren and girlfriend all suffered as a result of his alleged change in cognitive abilities.
He also dismissed the defense’s claim that Sanderson’s health problems were due to underlying medical conditions and advanced age.
“I don’t think we can trace his problems back to his pre-existing conditions,” Gibby said.

The expert eventually concluded that Sanderson would likely never recover from the injuries he sustained on the ski trip that day, which he believed was consistent with a head-on collision, as the plaintiff also suffered four broken ribs.
Before the court began, her lawyer complained that the Oscar-winner was being harassed outside the courtroom by reporters and photographers and that a camera placed directly in front of her on Wednesday violated the court’s etiquette rules.
Sanderson is seeking $300,000 in damages for Paltrow’s alleged negligence, and the actress is filing a counterclaim seeking $1 in damages plus her attorneys’ fees.
Paltrow’s attorney Steven Owens claimed Sanderson had been “obsessed” with suing the actress since the incident. AP Pool An X-ray of Sanderson’s broken ribs shown in court.
Paltrow’s attorney, Steven Owens, told jurors that Sanderson was “obsessed” with suing Paltrow and allegedly once told his daughter, “I’m famous” about the lawsuit.
The former army doctor’s lawyers argue Sanderson suffered physical and mental anguish following the accident, which also impacted the relationship he had with a woman at the time.
Sanderson claims the fall left him with broken ribs and a concussion that resulted in brain damage. Sanderson reportedly became angry and distant after the crash, damaging his relationship with his family and ending his 18-month romance with Utah’s Karlene Davidson.
In his opening statement Tuesday, Sanderson’s attorney Lawrence Buhler described the actress as a “distracted skier” who was “reckless” on the day of the crash.
Owens criticized the plaintiff’s allegation as “insulting” and “absolute bullshit” and claimed Sanderson had a history of neurological problems. The defense attorney asked the jury not to issue a verdict based on sympathy for Sanderson’s condition.
