Emmanuel Macron remained silent during the conflict over pension reform and let his head of government do it. Faced with the danger that nationwide protests would rock the political system, the president finally had to speak.
“Do you think it is my pleasure to do this renovation?” Macron started his interview on the two TV channels TF1 and France2 in a very aggressive tone, to make it clear from the start that he did not intend to start with a “mea culpa” to make a public apology for the crisis. He says he acted “in the best interests of the nation”. At best, he and his government failed to explain to the population why these measures to financially secure the pension system were necessary.
