The Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) confirmed today that the cards of the Russian Mir payment system can now be used at the ATMs of Cuban banks.
The official Twitter account of this institution added that money withdrawals can be made by exchanging rubles for Cuban pesos, citing information from the Russian media outlet Sputnik for more details.
For its part, the newspaper of the Eurasian country reported that the payment system in question continues to work on the issue of international acceptance of cards in friendly countries. This includes Cuba, which is very popular with Russian tourists.
“Cash can now be withdrawn from local bank ATMs with Mir cards,” said the Mir press service, quoted by Sputnik.
A few weeks ago, the Russian ambassador in Havana, Andrei Guskov, reported that the necessary procedures to integrate the Mir system in Cuba are nearing completion.
At that time, he emphasized that the introduction of independent payment mechanisms would have a positive impact on the tourism sector and bilateral relations in general.
In the last few days, several Cuban users shared on their social networks that various ATMs in this capital already accept the Russian card system.
Operation with Russian cards in Cuba will facilitate the development of tourism in this country, which will also grow due to the increase in flights to the island.
This Thursday, the Mintur also reported that the tour operator Pegas Touristik had expanded its flight program from Moscow to Cuba. In cooperation with Nordwind, it will continue to fly to two destinations: Varadero and Cayo Coco.
