(CNN) An “American Idol” contestant has challenged Judge Katy Perry over a joke described as “mom-shaming.”
In an episode that aired earlier this month, 25-year-old Sara Beth tried her hand at love for the singing competition in front of Perry and fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
The group expressed surprise at Lieber’s age and insisted she could live for 16.
As she revealed she’s a mother of three, Perry jokingly rose from her chair and pretended to fall back onto the table.
“If Katy lays on the table, I’ll probably pass out,” said Liebe.
“Honey, you’ve had too much on the table,” Perry quipped.
That comment sparked backlash on social media from those who believed Perry was “love-shaming mom”.
Love posted on her TikTok account that people were asking how she felt about the “that wasn’t super nice” joke. The aspiring singer said she found the incident “embarrassing” and “hurtful”.
“I wanted to take this opportunity to just say that I think it’s so cool that women support and uplift other women, and I think mom-shaming is super lame, and I think it’s hard enough is to be a mother, and it’s hard enough to be a woman,” she said. “I also wanted to take this opportunity to say that I see all new moms and just moms in general… keep loving your babies. Nobody deserves to feel like shit about it. I think if you’re a good mom and you love your babies, that’s all that really matters. Other comments just don’t seem necessary.”
CNN has reached out to Perry’s rep for comment.
Perry shares a two-year-old daughter with her fiancé, actor Orlando Bloom.
