The Galaxy S23 was released just over a month ago, but the Galaxy S24 is already making waves, including its processor. We already know what to expect in terms of device performance.
When we first heard about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 that will power Samsung’s next high-end Galaxy S24, the chip was already promising to be more powerful than Apple’s A16. We also recently learned that Qualcomm would opt for a 1+5+2 core configuration this time around, and that’s exactly what another report just confirmed.
In fact, developer and famous whistleblower Kuba Wojciechowski just revealed on his Twitter account that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is currently sporting the Codename Lanai or Pineapple and model number SM8650. Most importantly, however, the leak tells us more about what to expect from the chip’s cores.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 still looks more powerful
According to Kuba Wojciechowski, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would be used one ARM Cortex-X series “Gold+” CPU core, two ARM Cortex-A7xx “Titanium” CPU cores, three ARM Cortex-A7xx “Gold” CPU cores and two ARM Cortex-A5xx “Silver” CPU cores. We therefore find a 1 + 5 + 2 configuration and no longer 1 + 4 + 3 as in the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
By opting for an additional gold core, Samsung will probably rely heavily on the performance of its chip. A silver core therefore had to be sacrificed, the most energy efficient core, which means this new chip possibly not much less power hungry.
Above all, we know that The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would continue to use TSMC’s 4nm etch, Apple has probably monopolized the new process in 3 nm. Therefore, only minor improvements in energy efficiency can be expected.
Finally, Kuba Wojciechowski also reveals that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is also equipped with the Adreno 750 GPU (Adreno Gen 7.9.0) clocked at 770MHz. However, this frequency may change in the future. According to other leaks, this year Qualcomm could decide to launch its chip a few weeks ahead of the usual schedule and therefore we could see the Galaxy S24 arriving as early as next January.
