US citizen killed in drone attack on base in Syria

The Pentagon takes over a drone of “Iranian origin”. The US military flies several strikes in response.

One US citizen was killed and six others were injured in a drone strike on a military base in Syria. The Pentagon announced Thursday night that the fatality was an employee of a subcontractor working for the US Army. According to US intelligence services, the drone is “of Iranian origin”.

The attack reportedly took place at the Hassake base in northeast Syria. The wounded are five US soldiers and another US subcontractor. In response to the drone, the US Army reportedly carried out several “precision strikes” in eastern Syria. The target was groups “linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard”.

Hundreds of US Soldiers in Syria

Hundreds of US troops are stationed in Syria as part of a Washington-led coalition fighting the remnants of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia in the civil war-torn country.

In 2014, amid civil war in Syria, IS took control of large parts of Syria and Iraq, but gradually lost those areas again. After a US-led coalition drove IS from its last strongholds in Syria in March 2019, most of the remaining fighters retreated into the Syrian desert.
