375 cases of tuberculosis recorded in Costa Rica in 2022

Costa Rica’s health ministry said Friday that the country had reported 375 tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2022, a five percent increase from 2021.

In 2021, 357 patients were reported, while in 2022 there were 375 TB cases, 67.5 percent male (n=245) and 31.7 percent female (n=119).

“82.1 percent of the cases are between 20 and 69 years old, which corresponds to the group of productive workers,” said the health authority.

Similarly, the agency insisted that the Caribbean region of Huetar is the one with the highest incidence rates in any year for the past five years.

“In 2022, the Huetar Norte region will follow with a rate of 10.0. The western region has the lowest incidence rates throughout the period,” the health update text reads.

San José is the province with the most reported cases with 114, followed by Limón with 98 and Alajuela with 60. The age group with the greatest impact is the population with an age range of 20 to 64 years.

According to the ministry, there were a total of 34 deaths in 2021, of which 26 were men and eight were women.
