The 20-year-old Montreal native was handcuffed throughout the game. She recorded an anemic 23% success rate when Bencic started the rally and failed to score a break point during the duel.
The 26-year veteran and holder of seven titles on the pro circuit has shown remarkable efficiency. She took five of the six break points she offered herself, giving Belle Province pride no leeway.
In the first round, Fernandez defeated Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Bencic took over the collar for her in Florida against the Russian Ekaterina Aleksandrova (18th).
