Agatha Christie’s novels have not had much luck in their film adaptations. Among them, Murder on the Orient Express stands out, in part because there has never been a Poirot as tight and intense as Albert Finney’s. And also because behind the camera is an author of Sidney Lumet’s stature, who brings a special vehemence to the images and cleverly plays with the angles and sizes of the planes in the sets in which the intrigue moves.

Mimic is a fine example of the author’s narrative talent, delving into unhealthy environments and precisely playing with the mechanisms of suspense.

Ben Affleck had already shown his good ways as a director in Goodbye, Little Girl, Goodbye and The Town. In this case, he provides a meticulous staging to recreate the so-called “hostage crisis” of 1979 in Iran and details the rescue operation of American citizens involving two governments, the CIA and also Hollywood. Affleck successfully manages narrative tension and imaginatively uses ellipsis in a feverish and surprising story. It’s a pity that Fargo plunges into false suspense clichés in the last 20 minutes.
