“I am very pleased to announce my debut novel, 19 Steps, due out on September 12, 2023,” she wrote.
Nineteen Steps is a history novel about a brave 18-year-old woman named Nellie Morris who lives with her family in Bethnal Green in London’s East End as World War II rages around her.
When a tragic accident occurs during an air raid one night, the consequences are catastrophic – and for Nellie, life will never be the same again.
“Writing Nineteen Steps was a very special project for me. The story is inspired by real events and my own family history,” she explained, while sharing a photo of herself and her grandmother.
In a statement released through editor William Morrow, an imprint of HarperCollins, the Screen Actors Guild Award winner revealed some more details about her personal connection to the story, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Inspired by my Nanny Ruth, this book is very personal and close to my heart. I grew up hearing stories about their time in the war. I am honored to keep her story alive.”
Millie’s grandmother survived the Bethnal Green Tube disaster, an incident responsible for the largest single loss of civilian life in the United Kingdom during World War II.
173 people, mostly women and children, were crushed when Londoners tried to get into the tube station during an air raid.
The novel, which the publishers described as an “epic tale of love, loss and secrets,” focuses on Nellie’s chance encounter with an American airman stationed nearby and the horrifying aftermath of the fatal incident.
The young star informed fans of her grandmother’s death via a heartbreaking Instagram post published in November 2020, in which she said she “loves” her. [Ruth] more than anyone could ever love.’
