Nearly a thousand protesters, led by a group of army reservists, gathered outside the residence of the country’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, this Saturday to protest against the controversial judicial reform the government is in the process of finalizing and which in his opinion after it could turn the country into an undemocratic regime.
“Galant, one who is silent out of fear, one who realizes that he is responsible for the disintegration of the army, who knows that the Israeli military could be tried in the Hague court for helping a dictatorship,” they denounced in a statement to was made by those in charge of the Comrades in Arms group, the promoters of the protest.
The concentration takes place a few hours before the country becomes the scene of massive protests against the reform plan for the twelfth time in a row.
Many reservists, a key figure in the ranks of the Israeli army, have warned that they have no intention of doing their job in a country whose democratic values they believe could be destroyed if reform finally comes to fruition that will would give the government unprecedented control over the power of attorney.
For example, about 200 reserve pilots who fly combat missions, helicopters and transport aircraft announced last Friday that they would not be training in the coming week.
This Saturday, nearly 1,000 retired Israeli Air Force pilots pledged their support for their comrades in an open letter warning the government that “the volunteering process only takes place in a democratic country,” according to text collected by Portal Walla.
“The values pilots have been raised with for generations do not allow them to continue serving the country that is changing its face from democracy to dictatorship,” they warn.
