“We will respond to any attack on the bases set up at the request of the Syrian counter-terrorism government and the Islamic State group,” said the spokesman for Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

This is the first time an Iranian official has issued such a warning to the United States.

On the night of Thursday to Friday March 24, pro-Iranian militants were killed in US airstrikes in eastern Syria. This operation was conducted in response to a drone strike that killed one American and wounded six others.

US President Joe Biden said Washington does not seek conflict with Iran but will respond vigorously to any attack.

Iranian groups and their allies fighting alongside the regime in Damascus are well established in these regions near the border with Iraq, which are a key crossing point for arms into Syria.

The drone attack took place on Thursday afternoon against a maintenance facility at a US base near Al-Hasakah.

Tensions between Tehran and Washington in Syria have soared after the US chief of staff confirmed Iran could produce enough material for nuclear weapons production in two weeks and build a bomb in a few months.
