He took to the stage with Rosalie Vaillancourt last Sunday at Oliviers to accept the trophy for humorous web series of the year Complete high school diploma. Who is this director who also works regularly with Pierre-Yves Roy-Desmarais and Arnaud Soly? The newspaper spoke to Alec Pronovost.
Alec Pronovost is a tireless jack of all trades. The 29-year-old director has a number of numerous projects and likes to find solutions when the budget isn’t there.
“Working on a project for the web brings its own set of challenges,” he says. There is a little joy in these challenges. We organize. There’s something very alive about it.”
After studying film at UQAM, Alec Pronovost became friends with several young comedians who had just graduated from the National School of Humor between 2016 and 2017, including Rosalie Vaillancourt and Pierre-Yves Roy-Swamps.
Because he took his job seriously and saw sketch comedy shoots as an opportunity to gain experience, Alec worked on many projects in a short period of time.
“As soon as I left school, I was doing comedy twice a week,” he says. It was already a dream come true.”
At Sundance
The web series Le Killing opened the doors of the Noovo team for him in 2019. With this network he then shot Complètement lycée, Club Soly and most recently Symphonie pathétique.
In January, the director presented his short film Piscine pro at Sundance. “There was something very stimulating about it,” he said. It values independent cinema so much. I do hope to go back there.”
Alec Pronovost, who admires the work of filmmakers David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer), Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up) and Judd Apatow (40-year-old Virgin), dreams of making comedic feature films, he who has already directed Maria, in 2021, with Mariana Mazza.
“For me, the main goal is to write and direct a comic feature film that can be both mainstream and unique. […] I’m pumped I have many ideas that I want to develop!”
