More than 2,700 migrants have arrived on the coasts of southern Italy in the past 24 hours, according to local authorities, who have reported the disembarkation of around 2,000 people on the island of Lampedusa alone, where shelters are full, while the Coast Guard located the bodies of seven People after two boats sank in waters off the island of Malta last night.

The same body reported that ten migrants were rescued from these shipwrecks, according to the local press.

Italy and Malta saw the number of ships crossing the central Mediterranean multiply this weekend. On the sea’s southern coast, Tunisia said it had prevented the departure of more than 70 boats amid a wave that hadn’t stopped in weeks.

290 migrants arrived on Lampedusa this morning aboard seven boats rescued by the NGO Louise Michel and by the patrols of the Financial Guard, which also has maritime capabilities.

Earlier, between Friday and Saturday, more than 1,700 people arrived on the island in 43 different landings, which saturated the capacity of their accommodations with a capacity of 400 people, according to Agrigento City Hall after requesting the transfer of a group of immigrants to another port.

On the territory of the peninsula in the Calabria region, another 550 migrants arrived on Friday afternoon (24), most of whom disembarked in Crotone, a place where a month ago 89 people died as a result of a shipwreck.

On Friday, Italian authorities surrendered the port of Bari (south) to the MSF (Doctors Without Borders) ship, the Geo Barents, hours after rescuing 190 migrants in the central Mediterranean.

Another ship, NGO Emergency’s Life Support, rescued 78 people who were sailing in a rubber dinghy containing 28 unaccompanied minors and a pregnant woman.

According to official figures, more than 20,000 migrants have landed on Italian coasts so far this year, more than triple the 6,500 in the same period in 2022.
