President Emmanuel Macron, France’s number one enemy after pushing through social security reform and lowering the minimum retirement age, went on TV to defend himself against the attacks and to criticize the wave of strikes and violent protests in the country. What was bad for him got worse.
In the middle of a conversation with journalists, he hid his arms under the table, took off the conspicuous watch and placed it on a side table. It gave the impression of wanting to avoid flaunting luxury at a time when most French people are raging at the loss of a right and suffering the effects of unusually high inflation.
Despite being media savvy, Macron made the mistake of arrogance: he believed he could manipulate the public. He naively assumed that no one would notice his tactics. He managed to draw attention to something that might have gone unnoticed.
The Internet has not forgiven the faux pas. Fake news immediately surfaced about the appearance of the French representative, a former banker with a reputation for being elitist.
The “message” went viral that said watch cost 80,000 euros, around R$455,000, and the suit he wore was worth 5,000 euros, around R$28,000 while the Frenchman’s average pension is equivalent to BRL7,000.
The specialized press noted that the Bell & Ross bracelet accessories are much cheaper: 2,400 euros (R$13,000). Jonas & Cie clothing can be purchased for 450 euros (R$2,500).
It is unlikely that the truth will displace the misinformation spread by Macron’s political opponents and haters. Going on TV to explain himself may have halted his decline in popularity, but had the opposite effect. He was seen even more as vain, snobbish and conceited.
Here’s the lesson for anyone facing an image crisis: carefully consider what to wear, what to say, and gestures to make.
President Lula’s recent verbose gaffes, with horrific reactions in the press and on social media, prove that a little humility and caution never hurt anyone.
Macron, with and without a watch: he tried to convey a less elitist image and failed
