Artificial intelligence could come for your job.

Researchers from OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania argue in new research that AI could soon shake up some realms following the rise of ChatGPT, a shockingly intelligent chatbot released in November.

Researchers argued that 80 percent of the US workforce could have at least 10 percent of their job duties affected by ChatGPT adoption.

They also found that about 19 percent of workers find that at least 50 percent of their jobs are affected by GPT, or general-purpose technologies.

The researchers also found that higher-income jobs are likely to be more affected by GPT, but that it will spread across almost all industries.

The paper examines the “exposure” of work tasks to AI “without distinguishing between work-enhancing or work-displacing effects”.

Within the study, researchers defined “exposure” as a measure of whether access to a GPT or GPT-powered system would reduce the time it takes a human to complete a work task by at least 50 percent.

Researchers stressed that exposure is not the same as tasks that GPT will fully automate, but that the technology could save workers “a significant amount of time completing a large portion of their tasks.”

The study found that mathematicians, interpreters, accountants, paralegals, writers and authors are some of the occupations most exposed.

At the other end of the spectrum, lower-paying occupations such as track maintenance workers, cooks, mechanics, floorers, meatpackers and stonemasons were unaffected.

Open AI researcher Pamela Mishkin highlighted the research in a Twitter thread, writing, “Today’s GPTs can do a lot. In recent years, we’ve seen them get better and better at solving increasingly complex problems with fewer and fewer examples of fewer and fewer related problems.”

She added, “The paper examines this trend and not any specific model available today.”
