An imposing, cathedral-like place of worship, Saint-Bernard Church in Nova Scotia is seeking a buyer willing to pay $250,000 to get their hands on one of the largest churches in eastern Canada.

The church, listed for sale as a “single-family home” on the Re/Max website on Friday, is located in the small community of Saint-Bernard, which borders Baie Sainte-Marie, within the province of Acadian.

This historic gem, launched in 1910, took more than thirty years to build. The church was built with over 8000 granite blocks. It occupies approximately 14,000 square feet, for nearly a million cubic feet of interior space, the ad describes.

The building, which was desecrated last year, has six bathrooms, wonderful sea views, a 20-stop organ and “amazing acoustics” but has no bedrooms and is stripped of all its statues before acquiring it.

With a list price of $250,000, the church would cost half the price of a single-family home in the greater Montreal area, which averaged $515,000 in February. However, the buyer should expect to pay significantly more than the list price in order to be able to renovate the building, which is really necessary.

On the occasion of the church’s desecration in June 2022, CBC News reported that millions of dollars would be needed for its renovation, a sum the congregation could not afford, especially given that the church, which was built to accommodate a thousand people, only had dozens of worshipers to attend time of its closure.
