Australian Idol winner Royston Sagigi-Baira has revealed what really happened on stage during his glitchy live performance at Sunday night’s finale.

Royston seemed to forget the words while performing his debut single Invincible after he was seen fumbling with the lyrics and mumbling in confusion.

But the 23-year-old told KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O on Monday that wasn’t the case.

He explained that there was an issue with the audio that prevented studio audiences from hearing the first few seconds of his performance.

Royston could hear perfectly through his in-ear headphones and was confused when the audience and other attendees started saying there was a problem with the audio.

“I could hear well in my in-ears. That’s why I didn’t hear there was no sound,” he said.

His behavior looked strange to viewers at home because the audio issue didn’t affect TV broadcasts, he explained.

“For a second I thought, ‘Oh, maybe we could do it again. But then I realized this was live TV!’ he admitted.

Radio host Kyle Sandilands, who was a judge on Australian Idol, praised Royston for taking the faux pas and “smashing” the rest of his performance.

“That’s what happens when you’re live. Even if it stole your moment, a bit technical [thing]that’s going to happen every now and then in your career,” he advised.

“It wouldn’t be the first time there has been a technical problem and it won’t be the last.”

Royston’s performance of his winning single got off to a shaky start.

He seemed visibly confused while mumbling several lyrics from the first verse before mumbling “What?” and being seen tapping his ear, suggesting he couldn’t hear the lead track.

Just moments earlier, runner-up Phoebe Stewart, 15, stumbled down the stairs as she approached the hosts for the final decider.

Royston rushed up to help her up and the teenager took it in stride, joking that someone should make a meme of the awkward moment.
