Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Defense Minister Yoav Galant on Sunday. The resignation came after Galant on Saturday called for a monthlong pause in the government’s controversial judicial reform process.
The judicial reform that Netanyahu is trying to push has sparked a wave of protests across the country in recent weeks. Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tel Aviv this Saturday against the proposal.
Critics of the project claim that the change will increase the power of the legislature over the judiciary, endangering the democratic nature of the state.
In a speech on Saturday night, the ousted minister, who belongs to the same party as Netanyahu, told the conservative Likud he feared the reform split would pose a “real threat to Israel’s security.”
Ever since the Netanyahu government, one of the most farright in Israel’s history, unveiled the judiciary reform project in January, the country has been divided, with protests taking place every week.
