The government is confused and outraged by the PP’s position on Spanish foreign policy. The PP, despite subsequent corrections or clarifications – not at all effective when the aim was to withdraw what was interpreted – has questioned the role of the executive at the Iberoamerican Summit, applauding France against Spain in relation to the respective reforms of the pension model. And this despite the fact that the neighboring country is experiencing days of national emergency due to the violence and unrest that have erupted in the streets. Pedro Sánchez’s government is trying to find reasons to understand Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s strategy, but cannot find them.
In the PP, they stick to their goal of reaching the center or even center-left constituency and winning voters who are angry with the PSOE. But the Socialists very much doubt that this could happen when the opposition line insults the government in Brussels with bold lines for using and channeling European money and for legislative reforms, including pensions.
Feijóo’s criticism of Pedro Sánchez’s government for pension reform after it was agreed with the European Commission was the first warning to sound in La Moncloa as the president was en route to the Dominican Republic’s capital to attend the XXVIII Iberoamerican Summit. At the time, the leader of the PP was attending a meeting with Latin Americans in Madrid entitled Europe is Hispania. In Spain, but in other European countries and in the United States, it is not customary to celebrate acts based on nationality of birth. The PP has long tended towards this segmentation of origin and dealing directly with pastors of evangelical churches. The truth is, in front of this audience, Feijóo accused the prime minister of “tributing homage to the autocrats”. “Irresponsible, ignorant and ill-informed” was Sánchez’s reply during his performance on the same Saturday in Santo Domingo. At these summits, the Spanish head of state, before Juan Carlos I and now Felipe VI, is a figure with great respect for Latin American leaders, despite their ideological diversity. The King of Spain never misses the inaugurations of the rulers of these countries.
Feijóo does not want to question Spain’s presence at the Santo Domingo summit, stressed Esteban González Pons, MEP in charge of international affairs of the PP. What he meant, Pons assured, is that Pedro Sánchez “pays homage to the autocrats whom he condescends to.” With these accusations, the PP summed up the stupor of the government. And this Sunday, in another act, the President of the PP insisted that La Moncloa manipulated him. There was no truce, but accusations mounted as far as the eye could see. “They have such a high democratic deficit that they want to destroy the opposition, that in a democratic regime there is no opposition,” he cried. Perhaps the absolute lack of dialogue between Pedro Sánchez and Alberto Núñez Feijóo – which was broken off by the Prime Minister after the latter refused to renew the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) despite never having had an interest in this relationship – may serve Feijóo’s justification, that he was not familiar with the procedures of the executive branch.
The government has opened the door to Spain for 90,000 Venezuelans, including relevant figures in the opposition to Nicolás Maduro, such as Leopoldo López and his entire family, and is offering Spanish citizenship to all Nicaraguans who were stripped of it by Daniel Ortega. Neither he nor Maduro attended the Santo Domingo summit. Yes, there is Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. Relations with the Cuban leaders have always been maintained, with high points of sharp disagreements, both with the PP and the PSOE. González Pons has not clarified which presidents he was referring to when making this announcement on Saturday: “On Sunday we will see in the press a photo of Sánchez with some dictators and another, of Feijóo, Díaz Ayuso and Almeida, with the lover and children of freedom”. He referred to the action in Madrid with a thousand Latin Americans, where pastors of Christian churches asked God for the President of the PP, the President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid and the Mayor of the capital. Most photos by Sánchez are now with the king and the other presidents of the summit The government wants to believe that the expansion of the PP to the center with these pastures will be minimal or not happen.
