A Quebec-based Ukrainian is preparing to cycle across Canada this summer to raise funds for his country of origin, which has been at war for more than a year.
Dariy Khrystyuk flies to Vancouver on April 28. From there he cycles to Lévis, where he lives.
He hopes to complete the 5600-kilometer journey in about 50 days.
His goal is to raise at least $1 per kilometer traveled, or $5,600, to help rebuild his country.
“My goal is to at least double the original goal,” he explains. I am confident of reaching at least $10,000. »
The young man came to Quebec at the age of 10. More than ever, the 23-year-old feels a part of his country of origin, where many family members still live.
The need to help
Dariy’s fundraiser was originally supposed to go to another organization. But in the meantime the war in Ukraine began, and the young man felt the need to support his people.
“I felt emotionally closer to this fight,” he says.
Dariy will brave the weather, the wind and all the other challenges he will face on this journey.
It’s certainly a challenge, but very small compared to the hardships that Ukrainians have to overcome.
“Despite the size of their enemy, the people and the Ukrainian army show inspiring courage in the face of adversity,” argues the adopted Quebecer.
