Ukraine on Monday ordered all remaining civilians to evacuate the frontline town of Avdiivka in eastern Donetsk province, describing it as a “post-apocalyptic” lunar landscape due to constant Russian rocket and rocket attacks.

“It’s a shame to admit it, but Avdiivka is becoming more and more like a place from post-apocalyptic movies or… on the road to destruction by [Russian fascists] like Mariinka,” Vitalii Barabash, head of the military administration of the city of Avdiivka, wrote in a Facebook post.

“Therefore, a difficult decision was made to evacuate the rest of our heroes from Avdíivka – utility workers who at least somehow tried to maintain the city’s cleanliness and vitality,” continued Barabash. “So I’m not asking now, I strongly recommend leaving Avdiivka, because Russian missiles and missiles don’t spare anyone and anything…”

Avdiivka, which had a population of more than 32,000 before the war broke out, is just 55 miles south of the strategically important town of Bakhmut, which Russian forces failed to capture after six months of some of the conflict’s bloodiest battles.

Last week, Ukrainian officials warned that Avdiivka could become a “second Bakhmut” as Moscow turns its attention to it. Only around 2,000 residents live in the largely obliterated city.

A senior Ukrainian general said Kiev was planning its next move to crush Moscow’s regular troops and Wagner Group mercenaries before launching a full-scale counteroffensive in the spring to try to drive the enemy out of all captured areas.

The commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, visited the front line to the east and said his soldiers were still repelling Russian attacks on Bakhmut.

Defending the city is a “military necessity,” Syrskyi said, praising Ukraine’s resilience in “extremely difficult conditions.”

An update from the General Staff of Ukraine’s military says Kiev’s forces have repelled 41 attacks on Bakhmut, Avdiivvka and Mariinka in the past 24 hours.

Ukraine appears to be waiting for the arrival of modern weapons promised by its western allies over the winter before launching its attack.

The 18 Leopard 2 main battle tanks promised by Germany have already reached Ukraine, along with 40 German Marder infantry fighting vehicles and two armored recovery vehicles, a security source told Portal.

In addition to German military equipment, Ukraine has also received its first British Challenger main battle tanks, as well as Stryker infantry fighting vehicles and Cougar infantry fighting vehicles from the US, Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov announced on social media.

Meanwhile, regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said two people were killed and 32 injured on Monday after Russian forces fired two S-300 rockets at the eastern city of Sloviansk, northwest of Bakhmut.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy toured the southeastern Zaporizhia region, his third trip to the front in less than a week. He presented state awards to soldiers, visited wounded soldiers in a hospital and met with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, who had also traveled to the region to discuss nuclear safety.

The meeting came just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus.
