The measure, which came into force during Minister Chrystia Freeland’s economic update in the autumn, will be introduced in the 2023 budget as a “grocery rebate”.
This tax credit would allow a family of four to receive $467. The amount is $234 for single people and $225 for seniors.
If conditions remain the same as when the measure was announced in the autumn, the payments will be granted through a one-time payment and there would be no need to apply to the government.
At the time, the government claimed the measure would affect around 11 million Canadians. That would cost the state coffers two billion dollars.
Chrystia Freeland’s 2023 budget will be presented on Tuesday.
Food prices continued their steep rise earlier in the year, according to Statistics Canada, rising 10.6% year-on-year in February.
