The YouTube channel of an American insurance company published a video of a drop test of six Samsung Galaxy S22 and S23 series smartphones. Although the latter contain more recycled materials, they prove to be stronger than their predecessors.

Samsung’s choice doesn’t seem to have weakened its smartphones. On Monday, March 27, American insurance company AllState’s YouTube channel published a video testing the strength of the recyclable materials used in the last two lines of Galaxy S smartphones.

As of February 2022, the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra were the first models from the South Korean brand to feature six repurposed plastic components, specifically those made from old fishing nets. Samsung has upped the ante with the S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra, with a total of 12 recycled components and “22% recycled glass,” according to the marketing campaign. Not enough to weaken these phones, which came out better than the S22 at the time of the fall.

The S23 Ultra would be the strongest

As indicated by SamMobile, which shares the experience, the insurance company imposed the same test conditions on the six smartphones. A robot called DropBot was responsible for dropping each model twice from a height of one meter onto the same surface and in the same way: first from the front and then from the back.

Results: The Samsung Galaxy S23 performed best, although it hit one of its curved edges directly in one of the two falls. While the main camera glass was completely shattered, the video said the phone remained fully functional and in “much better” condition than the S22 Ultra.

As with the other models, the S22 and S23 were both unusable after being dropped, while the S23+ remained functional and withstood shock better than the S22+ after being dropped.

A square com shot

This was enough for the insurance company to conclude that the three “Galaxy S23s are just as strong, if not stronger, than the S22s”. Still, none of these six premium smartphones, covered in rugged Gorilla Glass, fully survived a recent three-foot drop onto a sidewalk. Remember that this test remains primarily an advertising campaign to sell protective devices for smartphones.

This reminder also applies to Samsung: the integration of recycled materials and the declared goal of achieving 100% recycled plastic in its smartphones by 2050 is commendable, but above all it is the annual renewal model for these smartphones, which are filled with rare metals , which are mined around the world, which have the greatest ecological impact.
