The Dungeons & Dragons movie conjures up a mini freaks and geeks reunion

This weekend marks the premiere of Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the second attempt at a theatrical live-action D&D film following Jeremy Irons’ 2000 blockbuster. There are reasons to look forward to this release: The The cast seems fun, the tone seems right, there are cool ties to the game itself, and the film is from the screenwriting duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who collaborated on the hilariously fun comedy Game Night 2018.

That’s not all Daley is known for — he first came to prominence on the short-lived cult NBC series Freaks and Geeks, starring as a D&D-playing geek named Sam. And in the run-up to the Honor Among Thieves promotion, “Sam” has reunited with his old pals Bill (Martin Starr) and Neal (Samm Levine) and picks up right where she left off with a long (loooong) Dungeons and Dragons game have .

It’s a sweet little. The group suddenly realize they’ve been playing for 23 years (the only season of Freaks and Geeks ended in 2000) and are surprised to discover that Bill and Neal now have facial hair (Sam laments that he’s not yet through puberty). . At the end, Sam talks about how cool it would be if there were a D&D movie…an idea the group immediately dismisses as ridiculous and impossible. Maybe not quite as ridiculous and impossible as a 23-year D&D game, but hey, I’m not going to complain about some of the freaks and geeks gang getting back together, just for a moment.

Correction: A previous version of this article inaccurately described how many live-action Dungeons & Dragons movies were released. We have updated the story to fix this error.
