British King Charles III. begins his three-day state visit to Germany today. For the monarch, it is the first trip abroad in his new role – before his coronation, on May 6. A first awaits him in Berlin: after a 21-gun salute reception at the airport, Charles is the first guest of state to be greeted with military honors at the Brandenburg Gate – close to the people in the center of the capital.
German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender will accompany Charles and his wife Camilla on their program in Berlin, Brandenburg and Hamburg until Friday. Steinmeier is throwing a state banquet for Charles with about 130 guests tonight. According to reports, the king wants to make part of his after-dinner speech in German.
