The great Henry Hathaway still ships with the craftsman’s label when he’s signed a good handful of masterpieces in various genres. This western borrows codes from crime movies to introduce the players in a deck of cards to be murdered one by one. The Poker of Death has a solid script and some impeccable actors, with Robert Mitchum expanding on his character from The Night of the Hunter in some ways.
