Eight arrested in migrant deaths in fire in Mexico

This was reported by the Secretary of Public Security, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, at a press conference in which she gave details of the events that took place yesterday in a shelter belonging to the National Institute for Migration (INM) with a record of 38 dead and 30 injured have happened .

The official said the suspects are making their ministerial statement before the Attorney General of the Republic and they are two immigration agents, five private security guards and one state security agent.

They are also demanding corresponding arrest warrants, said the human rights lawyer at the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Sara Irene Herrerías.

Officials stressed that none of the people staying at the immigration station took any action to help the migrants when they were already inside the burned room.

Rodríguez said that part of the investigation is to clarify what happened with the application of security and civil protection protocols and what actions each of the state officials were taking when this tragedy happened.

There are those responsible for this tragedy, said the security chief, warning that there will be no impunity in this case, stressing that politics related to international mobility and migration quality have nothing to do with what happened in Ciudad Juárez .

It is unacceptable that there are officials performing acts that break the law and do not treat migrants humanely, and what happened is a premeditated murder, Rodríguez said.

He announced that after the events in Ciudad Juárez, a review of all immigration authorities in the country would be carried out to protect the lives of migrants.

Security protocols, civil defense measures and provisions are reviewed.

For her part, prosecutor Herrerías reported that the first four arrest warrants against those responsible, one of which has been identified as the cause of the mattress fire that caused the tragedy, are expected in the next few hours.
