An impressive mosaic of images reveals all the details of our star.
Two American astrophotographers, Andrew McCarthy and Jason Guenzel, collaborated to create a stunning photo of our Sun.
About 90,000 images were compiled to achieve this result, showing the full complexity of our star, including details of the chromosphere and photosphere.
“A Mixture of Art and Science”
Andrew explains that he used an image of the 2017 eclipse as a base. The other images were then overlaid to create this 140 megapixel photo, which current tools could not obtain.
The photo is all the more interesting as the Sun has entered a new phase that should lead to a peak in activity in 2025. Therefore, we have observed many phenomena in recent months. For now, Earth’s magnetic shield protects us from coronal mass ejections. However, we are not immune to a superstellar flare that could hit not only electronic equipment in orbit, but infrastructure on the surface as well. For example, in 1989, more than 6 million people in eastern Canada were left in the dark after a solar storm.
