Body on couch: Pole lived with dead mother for 13 years

In Poland, a man has been living with the mummified corpse of his mother for years.

The 76-year-old man apparently had the dead person with him for more than 13 years, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor in charge in Gleiwitz (Gliwice) told the German Press Agency on Thursday.

A DNA analysis showed it was his mother.

According to Polish media reports, the man lived in part of an isolated house in the Silesian town of Radlin, where his sister and her husband also lived. He was considered an eccentric and did not receive visits from relatives.

As his behavior was becoming more and more evident, the brother-in-law called an ambulance at the end of February.

Corpse lying on sofa

The rescue team saw a horrific image in the 76-year-old man’s apartment: the mummified corpse of a woman was lying on the sofa. A forensic report revealed that the woman had died in 2010.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office opened the grave in which the man’s mother was buried in January 2010. “When the coffin was opened, it was discovered that there was no body in it,” said the Public Ministry spokeswoman.

According to media reports, the 76-year-old should not have dealt with the death of his mother. He dug up the body and embalmed it with chemicals. The substances used are being investigated.

The 76-year-old man was admitted to a hospital. The Public Ministry is investigating him for desecrating a corpse.
