Actress Gwyneth Paltrow on Thursday won a multimilliondollar lawsuit over a sevenyearold skiing accident in the United States after a jury unanimously ruled that the plaintiff was responsible for the collision.

Terry Sanderson, the retired optometrist who collided with Paltrow in 2016 while they were skiing at the Deer Valley luxury complex in Utah, was blamed for the accident after two hours of deliberations.

Sanderson sued Paltrow in 2019 over the accident, which he said left four broken ribs, permanent brain damage and a $3.3 million financial loss.

Paltrow claimed it was Sanderson who punched her in the back and sued him for a nominal $1 and entertainment expenses.

During the trial, which began last Tuesday in Park City, Utah, the jury heard several experts detail the medical history of Sanderson, who suffered a heart attack, loss of vision in one eye and mental health problems before the accident.

The jury members also heard from representatives of the resort, as well as versions from both parties.

“Mr. Sanderson met me right on that hill,” Paltrow said in the statement. “Two skis went between my skis, forcing me to open my legs, and then a body pushed me, and there was a very strange growl (…) I felt hurt,” reported the actress, who is with her Her husband Brad Falchuk skied with her children.

“I was hit really hard from behind, just above my shoulder blades,” said Sanderson, 76.

“It was a very bad accident, it has never been so bad in my life and I flew (…). The last thing I remember is that everything went black.”

“It’s not fair”
In their closing arguments, the attorneys sought US$3.27 million (R$16.3 million) in monetary compensation for Sanderson, who claims the impact altered his personality and affected his ability to maintain a relationship with his family build and enjoy life.

The calculation presented by Sanderson’s defense this Thursday is that he earns $33 (R$168) for every hour he spends awake from the accident until his death, which lawyers say could occur in 10 years.

“$3.276 million for the 17 years that Terry has to deal with permanent brain damage,” said attorney Lawrence Buhler.

“You can say that [o dano] priceless (…) But this is the most valuable time of his life,” Bühler told the jury. “These are his golden years, (…) when he could enjoy his retirement and do things like travel.”

“He hit her, he hurt her and now he’s asking her to pay him $3 million just because,” Paltrow’s attorney Stephen Owens said. “It’s not fair”.

“The easiest thing for my client would have been to write a check and walk away from it, but what message would that send to her children? What a price she has to pay [por ser famosa]”Owens continued. “That’s wrong, he hurt her, and now he wants her money.”

The trial drew public attention and sparked an avalanche of memes and comments on social media, ranging from Paltrow’s clothing to the details of the interrogations.

On the fringes of her movie star career, Paltrow delved into the wellness industry with her brand Goop, which sells products like vitamins, diets, candles, and sex toys.
